How would I go about selling my fabric designs to companies?

I am a designer, currently working on a series of fabric designs. As my background is in graphics, how would I go about selling my pattern designs to manufacturers/ companies? They are printable, repeating patterns. Would I need a fabric sample? Do companies buy from freelance designers?
