What does this mean in russian ?

whats the difference between "Давать " and "Дать " ? In my study book it says the first one is the imperfect aspect and the second one is the perfective aspect. could a fluent russian speaker please explain what a imperfective and perfective aspect is and what the difference are in the words. Please I have no idea what the difference between the two are. Thanks !
