Why did Darwin's abilty to enjoy things atrophy?

At a certain point in his studies, he enlisted the aid of the willfulling ignorant public to bolster his failing grades. He was still a laughingstock in the society of intelligence, and showed even less character than formerly. He must have refused to see his own narcissistic nature and true to his ambition, accepted the accolade of fools.
